ID 4754 Fall Senior StudioSenior year studio heavily focuses on research, conceptual design, and detail within projects. Students are pushed to their limits and completed two projects. We participated in Steelcase's NEXT University Competition, which involved detailed research on education and modern learning styles. As we finished the NEXT Project we partnered with Cornerstone Flooring and Strengthen our Specification Skills in the Cornerstone Specification Competiton

ConceptThe inspiration and concept of the project focuses on the element of circulation. Focusing my design on circulating public and private spaces, group and individual study spaces, and technology and angalous spaces creates a cohesive space where learning flows. The spaces flow into each other to allow students the flexibility to pick which learning space they feel will maximize their learning. Learning and education is found in all areas of a space whether it’s in the café, a group study, or walking the halls with a teacher learning. Learning is not bound to a classroom, but it is active and moving. The beauty of learning is it happens throughout the entire day and in all phases of the building. There is no one space for learning or teaching. I have incorporated all elements of learning such as group collaboration, peer-to-peer, technological spaces, and lecture spaces. These spaces flow in and out of each other. These spaces support learning and allow versatility and comfort that is needed. The space incorporates all aspects of technology while maintaining the classic and needed angalous spaces for students to write and collaborate on. The furniture style and arrangements will be movable to enhance the concept of circulating space and the flow of learning. The space finds inspiration from the Seattle Central Library with its mimicking vibrant neon green, navy, grey, black and white color scheme. Similar materials such as glass wood and stone were used. The spaces allows for a modern energetic feel to keep students and staff properly stimulated through their studies. |
ResearchUnderstanding the effects design has on teaching and learning can only aid in the end result of our design process. During the research part of this project, I spent my time understanding the evolution of teaching and learning. By looking at precedents from University of Florida, Stanford and and other Steelcase University’s, I can see what has been done that has rendered successful outcomes and what has been done that might be challenging for teaching and learning. While I spent time studying precedents I also could not neglect understanding the conventional learning styles. My research took me to understanding the difference of unique teaching and learning styles. I found how a student receives knowledge.
Students learn in all types of atmospheres, as design evolves we can see that not one space is designated for learning. Learning can take place on a peer-to-peer basis as well as in group setting, while walking the hall with a teacher, or through satellite learning. My research has helped me to understand the need for such spaces. As I am aware of these changes in teaching and learning I can use design to aid in that process. Through research I am able to take the problem at hand and form a design solution that best solves such problems while making a space comfortable and versatile in function. My design solution focuses this versatile space and allows for learning to flow through space to space. Whether it may through a mentor-student relationship or a satellite class, students are able to get the most out of the learning space as they experience the fullness of learning. |
